A tribute to Mohammed Rafi

Een uitdaging voor het Breathing ensemble, “a tribute to” de grootste Bollywood zanger aller- tijden, Mohammed Rafi. Aan de reacties van het publiek van de eerste show (9 december 2012, Meervaart Amsterdam) te horen, is het ze gelukt. De adembenemende en spectaculaire show deed voor het publiek tijden herleven en elk lied werd ontvangen met groot enthousiasme.

In de show staat de Bollywood legende Mohammed Rafi (24 december 1924 – 31 juli 1980), die meer dan 30.000 liedjes heeft opgenomen, centraal. De grote playback-zanger zong in vele Indiase talen, zoals Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Marathi, Kannada en Telugu. De Bollywood acteurs playbackten de vaak melancholische liedjes, die miljoenen huiskamers en filmzalen tussen de jaren 40 en 80 met de unieke sound van Rafi vulde. Denk aan ‘’ Bedan Pe Sitare Lapete Hue”,‘Hum Tumse Juda Ho Ke’ of ‘Jaane Chaman Shola Badan’; nummers waar iedereen, zowel Indiaas als niet-Indiaas, bekend mee is.  Ondanks dat zijn liedjes een duidelijk Indiaas karakter hebben, zijn er ook Amerikaanse, Zuid-Amerikaanse en zelfs Afrikaanse invloeden te horen in het instrumentgebruik en de arrangementen. In de jaren zestig en zeventig werd zijn werk naast vele nominaties ook bekroond met verschillende awards in Bollywood. Waar zijn voorkomen in de vele Bollywood films ontbreekt, is zijn stem onmiskenbaar te horen en niet meer weg te denken.

Een nieuwe generatie Indiase vocalisten, met hun wortels in Nederland, India, Afghanistan en Suriname vertolken Rafi’s grootste solo stukken en duetten. Een uitdaging voor Tamim Taban, Shalini Bholasing, Ilyas Nadjafi en Emma Westhout die alle vier in de Nederlandse Bollywood scene hard aan de weg timmeren. In een sfeervolle setting worden zij begeleid door het Breathing ensemble, bestaande uit de crème de la crème van de Nederlandse Jazz, Klassiek en Indiase muziek, onder leiding van violist en arrangeur Satyakam Mohkamsing. Het concert wordt geregisseerd door Madan K.C., die zelf ook internationaal verantwoordelijk is voor diverse Bollywood producties.

Op zondag 6 oktober om 14:30 wordt er ook in het Lucent Danstheater Den Haag, in samenwerking met Breathing, een ode gebracht aan de grootste zanger van de Bollywood films Mohammed Rafi. Uit het immens grote repertoire van bijna 30.000 liedjes wordt een selectie van zijn grootste hits vertolkt in een nostalgische show en zal, ook in Den Haag, het publiek zich in Bollywood sferen wanen. Cabaretier, acteur en presentator Narsingh Balwantsingh, zal als host de show nog een extra boost geven, wat gezien zijn achtergrond garant staat voor een enerverende en vermakelijke middag.

A challenge, it was, for the Breathing ensemble: “a tribute to” the biggest Bollywood singer of all times. According the audience of the first show (December 9^th 2013, Meervaart Amsterdam) they performed more than great. Moreover, the show appeared to be “breathtaking” and a true trip down memory lane. Each song was recognized and enhanced by the audience with great enthusiasm.

The show is dedicated to Bollywood legend Mohammed Rafi, who recorded over 30.000 songs in many Indian languages, such as Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Marathi, Kannada and Telugu. The Bollywood actors used to playback Rafi’s songs and millions of living rooms and cinemas were filled by Rafi’s melancholic sounds during the fourties-eighties. Great hits include:  ‘Bedan Pe Sitare Lapete Hue’, ‘Hum Tumse Juda Ho Ke’ or ‘Jaane Chaman Shola Badan’, which are songs where both Indian and non-Indian are familiar with. Even though his songs are Indian, American, South-American and African influences are clearly noticeable in his music. In the sixties and seventies, Rafi’s work was nominated numerous times and he received several awards in Bollywood. Despite his lack of appearances in the movies, his voice and sound are most definitely being heard.

A new generation of Indian vocals, with their roots in Holland, India, Afghanistan and and Suriname, impersonate Rafi’s greatest hits. It’s challenging for Tamin Taban, Shalini Bholasing, Ilyas Nadjafi and Emma Westhout, who are rising stars in the dutch Bollywood scene. Together with the Breathing ensemble, consisting of the top-notch from the Dutch Jazz, Classic and Indian scene, led by violinist Satyakam Mohkamsing, they put down a great and memorable show.

The next show will be hosted by Lucent Danstheater in The Hague on Sunday October 6^th on 14:30. This time the audience in The Hague will experience a trip down to memory lane during another great and nostalgic “tribute to Mohammed Rafi”. Comedian and actor Narsingh Balwantsingh will be the host of the show. Given his background, this will guarantee an afternoon full of excitement.
